Advanced Remote Sensing
Dr. David Groeneveld is owner and president of Advanced Remote Sensing, ARSI, a redux from a successful ag startup, HydroBio, that sold to Monsanto subsidiary Climate Corp in 2017. HydroBio’s technology tracks crop water use by satellite to deliver the irrigation prescription with the accuracy of soil probes in every pixel of each field. It is now controlling irrigation in 14 countries on three continents. Before becoming an entrepreneur, David owned and managed a consulting business specializing in remote sensing analysis of water and environment, first from California and then New Mexico.

David moved to South Dakota in 2017, founded ARSI in early 2018 and with the help of funding from SD Governor’s Office of Economic Development, wrote two Small Business Innovation Research proposals – both were awarded this year. Funding from the NSF award enabled a breakthrough in atmospheric correction of satellite imagery pioneered by David and a staff of South Dakotans. This unique IP will be used to leverage key strategic partnerships with satellite data suppliers and develop a series of reliable and innovative products for crop insurance and farming. The USDA award is enabling development of innovative services for crop insurance loss adjusting and for planning. Such services may be a market channel ARSI can exploit to deliver reliable and innovative image products to farming at low cost.

For ARSI, 2019 is a year for proof of concept, R&D, deep market research and development of strategic partnerships. We plan commercial launch of services for satellite data suppliers in 2020 and for services for crop insurance in 2021.
